RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday described the late Holkar queen of Indore, Ahilybai Holkari, as the ideal ruler in a message marking the 299th birth anniversary of the queen.
Who is Ahilybai Holkar ?
Ahilyabai Holkar was the Rani of Indore, with in Maratha Confederacy the She established maheshwar in Mp as the seat of the Holkar Dynasty.
After her husban khande Rao’s death, Ahilyabai had given up all desires of life and decided to Perform Sati to accompany her husban at his funeral Pyre. when shed had made up her mind to perform Sati and was not relenting it was finally her father-in-law Malhar Rao who made fervent emotional appeals to Stop her.
Malhar Rao Holkar died in 1766, 12 years after the death of his son khande Rao. Malhar Rao’s Grand Son Male Rao Holkar became the ruler of Indore in 1766, under Ahilyabai regency, but he too died within few months in 1767. Ahily but he too Ahilyabai became the Ruler of Indore after the death of his Son.
She was also considered Capable enough to run Civil and military affairs. when Ahmad Shan Durrani invaded Punjab in 1765. Malhar Rao way busy fighting the Abdali- Rohilla army in Delhi. During the same time Ahilyabai captured the Gohad fort near Gwalior.
The Maharashtra Cabinet on March 13th formally. approved the renaming of Ahmednagar district to “Ahilyanagar” after the 18th century Maratha queen Aliyabai Holkar.
