Why in news ?
After general elections for the 18th Lok Sabha, the First Session of Lok Sabha and 264th Session of Rajya Sabha were called from 24th and 27th June, respectively. Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on 2nd July, 2024 while Rajya Sabha has been adjourned sine die on 3rd July, 2024.
What is sine die:
In the Indian parliament, “adjourned sine die” is a Latin term that means “without a day” and is used to signify an indefinite adjournment of a parliamentary session.
The House is adjourned by the Presiding officers of the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha without specifying a date for its re-assembling.
The presiding officer of the House has the authority to call for re-assembling the House before the date or time to which it has been adjourned or at any time after the House has been adjourned sine die.
The concept of adjournment sine die has roots in early parliamentary practices and historically emerged as a way to manage parliamentary sessions.
In legislative assemblies, adjournment procedures are governed by established rules, and typically, an adjournment happens at the end of a day’s sessions following a vote or decision by the presiding officer.
